The exhibition “Ceramics, Image and Metaphor” is a record of an encounter with matter, space, and time. The works on display were created during an artist residency at the Latvian Center for Contemporary Ceramics in Daugavpils in July 2026—a place where clay, the artist’s gesture, and fire form a shared language.
The objects on display oscillate between sculpture and painting. Their surfaces can be read like painterly canvases—through color, rhythm, layering, light, and texture—yet at the same time, they are autonomous forms that actively engage in dialogue and interact with their surroundings. The painting extends beyond its plane, and the sculpture begins to be viewed as a notation, a sign, or a fragment of a larger story.
Metaphor emerges where form ceases to be unambiguous. Geometric solids may evoke architecture, fragments of landscape, or traces of human presence. Organic structures resemble the process of growth, decay, and transformation. Each object remains open to individual associations—it is a question rather than a ready-made answer.
The exhibition also explores an attempt to come to terms with unpredictability. Fire changes color, distorts shape, and reveals the material’s hidden tensions. During the firing process, the artist loses some control, surrendering the work to the forces of temperature and time. What emerges, therefore, is the result of a dialogue: between intention and chance, gesture and matter, image and space.
“Ceramics, Image, and Metaphor” is a story about matter that does not remain passive. About clay that preserves traces and memory. About form that can become an image, and an image that can become an object. About the search for meaning between what is recognizable and what eludes definition.
Alicja Buławka – Fankidejska
Sculptor, ceramic artist, represented by Fine Art Gallery, Wrocław. Born February 17, 1983, in Poland. Studied at the Department of Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk (Poland).Since 2013, she is an assistant in the Ceramics Studio at the Department of Sculpture and Intermedia at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk. She currently holds the position of assistant professor.
She focuses primarily on artistic ceramics and explores alternative methods of firing ceramics in gas and wood-fired kilns.
Together with the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk, she organizes and leads the International Ceramic Symposium “Alternatively Ceramics” in Skórcz.
She is the recipient of, among other honors: a Honorable Mention (2013) and the Grand Prize—Award of Excellence—for her ceramic work “Into the Wild” at the Cluj International Ceramics Biennale, Museum of Art, Cluj-Napoca, Romania in 2015; the Rector’s Award from the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk in 2015, 2021, 2022, and 2024; and the Grand Prize at the National Ceramic Sculpture Review (2021).
She has presented her ceramic works at solo exhibitions (Poland, Denmark, Latvia, Lithuania) and in numerous group exhibitions in Poland and abroad; she has participated in many open-air workshops, symposiums, international projects, and artist residencies, and has curated exhibitions.
Her works are included in the collections of the Museum of Art in Cluj-Napoca (Romania), the Latvian Center for Contemporary Ceramics, Guldagergaard—International Ceramic Research Center (Denmark), the National Museum in Gdańsk, and in private collections.
Dmitrij Buławka-Fankidejski (PL)
Born in1988. He studied at the Faculty of Sculpture and Intermedia at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk (graduated in 2016). Assistant at the Drawing Basics Studio at the Faculty of Sculpture and Intermedia at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk. Together with the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk, he organizes and runs the International Ceramic Symposium ”Alternatively Ceramics" in Skórcz.
He works with sculpture, installation, drawing, ceramics, and creates metal sculptures. For his projects, he designs and builds his own gas kilns for firing ceramics and melting metals.
He received the Rectors' Award at the exhibition Best Diplomas of the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk in 2016 for his sculpture “Question about Space.” He received an honorable mention for his ceramic sculpture “Aspect” at the National Review of Ceramic Sculpture, WL4 Gdańsk (2019). Winner of the Grand Prize at the International Virtual Exhibition “Transformation,” Bonartproject, Iran (2021). He received the Grand Prix Award at the 5th International UNICUM Ceramic Triennial in Slovenia for his work “Excerpt” (2023) and honorable mention at the 1st International Ceramic Sculpture Triennial (MTRC) in Poland (2025).
He is the author of the Aerton Senna monument in Wałbrzych, Poland.
He has participated in numerous exhibitions, open-air events, workshops, and conferences in Poland and abroad.
He has presented solo exhibitions in Poland, Lithuania and Czech Republic.
His works are included in the collections of the Art Museum in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, the Rothko Musum and the Latvian Centre for Contemporary Ceramics in Daugavpils, Latvia, the Panevėžys Civic Art Gallery in Lithuania, as well as in private collections.
He participated in the project “Organization, preparation, and implementation of an artistic project to decorate the facades of tenement houses in the Main Town of Gdańsk,” Poland (2014-18).

Izstāde “Keramika: Attēls un metafora” ir satikšanās liecība ar mākslu, telpu un laiku. Eksponētie darbi tapuši mākslinieku rezidences laikā Latvijas Laikmetīgās keramikas centrā Daugavpilī 2026. gada jūlijā — vietā, kur māls, mākslinieka žests un uguns veido kopīgu valodu.
Izstādītie objekti balansē starp tēlniecību un glezniecību. To virsmas var nolasīt kā gleznieciskus audeklus — caur krāsu, ritmu, slāņojumu, gaismu un tekstūru —, tomēr vienlaikus tās ir autonomas formas, kas aktīvi mijiedarbojas un veido dialogu ar apkārtējo vidi. Glezniecība iziet ārpus tās plaknes, un tēlniecība sāk tikt uztverta kā pieraksts, zīme vai fragments no lielāka stāsta.
Metafora dzimst tur, kur forma pārstāj būt viennozīmīga. Ģeometriskie apjomi var atsaukt atmiņā arhitektūru, ainavas fragmentus vai cilvēka klātbūtnes pēdas. Organiskās struktūras atgādina augšanas, sabrukšanas un transformācijas procesus. Ikviens objekts paliek atvērts individuālām asociācijām — tas ir jautājums, nevis gatava atbilde.
Izstāde pēta arī mēģinājumu samierināties ar neparedzamo. Uguns maina krāsu, deformē formu un atsedz materiāla slēptos spriegumus. Apdedzināšanas procesā mākslinieks daļēji zaudē kontroli, nododot darbu temperatūras un laika spēkiem. Līdz ar to tapušais rezultāts ir dialogs: starp ieceri un nejaušību, žestu un materiālu, tēlu un telpu.
“Keramika: Attēls un metafora” ir stāsts par materiālu, kas nepaliek pasīvs. Par mālu, kas saglabā pēdas un atmiņu. Par formu, kas var kļūt par attēlu, un attēlu, kas var kļūt par objektu. Par nozīmes meklējumiem starp atpazīstamo un to, kas nepakļaujas definīcijai.
Alicja Buławka – Fankidejska
Tēlniece, keramiķe, kuru pārstāv galerija Fine Art Gallery Vroclavā. Dzimusi 1983. gada 17. februārī Polijā.
Studējusi Gdaņskas Tēlotājmākslas akadēmijas (Polija) Tēlniecības katedrā.
Kopš 2013. gada viņa ir asistente Keramikas darbnīcā Gdaņskas Tēlotājmākslas akadēmijas Tēlniecības un starpmediju katedrā. Pašlaik ieņem docentes amatu.
Savā darbībā viņa galvenokārt pievēršas mākslinieciskajai keramikai un pēta alternatīvas keramikas apdedzināšanas metodoloģijas gāzes un malkas cepļos.
Kopā ar Gdaņskas Tēlotājmākslas akadēmiju viņa organizē un vada starptautisko keramikas simpoziju “Alternatively Ceramics” Skūrčā (Skórcz).
Saņēmusi vairākus apbalvojumus, tostarp: Atzinības rakstu (2013) un Lielo balvu (Award of Excellence) par keramikas darbu “Into the Wild” Klužas Starptautiskajā keramikas biennālē Klužas-Napokas Mākslas muzejā Rumānijā (2015); Gdaņskas Tēlotājmākslas akadēmijas rektora balvu 2015., 2021., 2022. un 2024. gadā; kā arī Lielo balvu Nacionālajā keramikas tēlniecības skatē (2021).
Viņa ir izstādījusi savus keramikas darbus personālizstādēs (Polijā, Dānijā, Latvijā, Lietuvā) un daudzās grupās izstādēs Polijā un ārvalstīs; piedalījusies daudzos plenēros, simpozijos, starptautiskos projektos, mākslinieku rezidencēs, kā arī kurējusi izstādes.
Viņas darbi atrodas Klužas-Napokas Mākslas muzeja (Rumānija), Latvijas Laikmetīgās keramikas centra, Starptautiskā keramikas pētniecības centra Guldagergaard (Dānija), Gdaņskas Nacionālā muzeja krājumos, kā arī privātkolekcijās.
Dmitrij Buławka-Fankidejski (PL)
Dzimis 1988. gadā. Studējis Gdaņskas Tēlotājmākslas akadēmijas Tēlniecības un starpmediju fakultātē (absolvējis 2016. gadā). Asistents Zīmēšanas pamatu darbnīcā Gdaņskas Tēlotājmākslas akadēmijas Tēlniecības un starpmediju fakultātē. Kopā ar Gdaņskas Tēlotājmākslas akadēmiju organizē un vada starptautisko keramikas simpoziju “Alternatively Ceramics” Skūrčā.
Strādā tēlniecības, instalācijas, zīmējuma un keramikas jomā, kā arī veido metāla skulptūras. Saviem projektiem pats projektē un būvē gāzes cepļus keramikas apdedzināšanai un metāla kausēšanai.
Saņēmis Rektora balvu Gdaņskas Tēlotājmākslas akadēmijas labāko diplomdarbu izstādē 2016. gadā par skulptūru “Question about Space”. Saņēmis atzinības rakstu par keramikas skulptūru “Aspect” Nacionālajā keramikas tēlniecības skatē WL4 Gdaņskā (2019). Lielās balvas ieguvējs starptautiskajā virtuālajā izstādē “Transformation”, Bonartproject, Irānā (2021). Saņēmis Grand Prix balvu 5. starptautiskajā UNICUM keramikas triennālē Slovēnijā par darbu “Excerpt” (2023) un atzinību 1. starptautiskajā keramikas tēlniecības triennālē (MTRC) Polijā (2025).
