Year and Place: 2025, Latvia.
Materials: Clay, terra sigillata, glaze.
Technique: Hand‑built; reduction firing in smoke kiln.
Description: This work arises from a similarly instinctive, material‑driven process, shaped through delicate layers of terra sigillata, slips, and mineral washes that interact with the volatile currents of smoke‑reduction firing. Its surface holds the fleeting signatures of that encounter—soft veils of grey, wind‑swept tonal gradients, and ash‑borne markings that settle like traces of a passing weather front. The piece captures a moment of suspension between dissolution and form, where the clay records the movement of air, heat, and particulate matter as if they were gestures. What emerges is an object both grounded and ephemeral, carrying an elemental quietness while revealing a finely attuned sensitivity to the shifting atmospheres that shaped it.
